Clerkship Program

Emory University Department of Medicine has three Clerkship programs for third-year and fourth-year Emory School of Medicine medical students. Each student is required to take both third-year clerkship and has an option of taking the Medicine Sub-Internship to meet the School of Medicine’s Sub-Internship requirement.

Junior Medicine Clerkship Program

The 3rd year Clerkship Program consists of eight weeks of hospital-based general internal medicine divided into two four-week rotations. Each 3rd year Emory University School of Medicine medical student must complete the Clerkship program. During the 2-month clerkship program, each student will become an integral part of the Department of Medicine team and will have a profound impact on patient’s lives. Under the supervision of Department of Medicine faculty, each student will function as a primary caregiver of your patients.

All students will spend at least one of these rotations at Grady Memorial Hospital. Students will spend the other rotation at one of the Emory University affiliated hospitals, the Atlanta VA, Emory University Hospital or Emory University Hospital Midtown. Each hospital site offers unique learning opportunities and exposes students to a wide range of medical diseases and patient populations.

By the end of the clerkship, through ward experiences, educational activities, and self-study, students will have acquired a core knowledge base and established a framework for a rational, systematic approach to the care of inpatient general medicine patients.

Ambulatory Care Block

All M3 students spend 12 weeks on the Ambulatory Care Block, where students rotate through a variety of outpatient experiences, including outpatient pediatrics, surgical sub-specialties, and outpatient general medicine.

As part of this rotation, six weeks are spent on the Adult Primary Care clerkship, where students are placed at a family medicine or internal medicine primary care site in the Atlanta metro area.
