Thank you for your interest in Emory University's
J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency
Programs. We do not have any unfilled PGY1,
PGY2 or PGY3 positions for 2008-09. The deadline
for foreign medical graduates to apply to our program for 2008-09 is November 1, 2008.
Applications will be downloaded beginning in September for
2009-10 via ERAS.
We do not offer externships or observerships. If you are currently in medical school and are interested in a Visiting Student Elective click here
Emory's program is both rigorous and competitive.
Each year we receive more than 3000 applications
and interview 10-15% of candidates.
We offer approximately 50 three-year positions (Categorical and Primary Care), 4 Research Pathway positions (which require application to the Categorical Program) and approximately 30 one-year
positions (Preliminary and Transitional).
The Preliminary one-year positions are primarily
reserved for applicants matching in Emory’s
Radiation Oncology residency.
The Transitional one-year positions are primarily
reserved for applicants matching in Emory
residencies such as (but not limited too) Anesthesiology, Radiology,
Neurology Ophthalmology and Dermatology.
We no longer have a Med/Peds or Med/NucMed program
We accept applications through ERAS (http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm) ONLY. Please do not send paper applications
or additional paper documents. Interviews
are granted on an invitation only basis.
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) should
visit ECFMG at http://www.ecfmg.org/eras/index.html.
IMGs applying to our program should be aware
of the following:
While we do not require clinical experience
in the US (such as an elective, externship or observership)
we strongly recommend it as it does make
you a more attractive applicant. We also prefer that you have graduated within five years of application, althought it is not required. You must
be fully ECFMG certified by the time we submit
our rank list in February 2009. Emory University currently sponsors
J-1 visa and H-1 visas. To apply for an H-1 visa, you must complete and pass USMLE Step 1, 2 and 3 by February
15, 2009.
In summary, criteria for applications are
as follows:
* Application through ERAS only, deadline
November 1st, 2008, complete application
by January 1, 2009.
* USMLE Transcript Step 1
* Minimum scores = PASSING (We do not have
any particular USMLE score at which we do/do
not grant an interview, but obviously those
with the best scores have a better chance
of getting invited. Thus it is advantageous
to have competitive scores)
* Two letters of recommendation minimum (one must
be from a faculty member of your Department
of Medicine) ERAS allows you to submit up to four.
* Dean's letter or Dean equivalent letter
Interviews are granted on an invitation only basis and take place in November, December and January.
All our current residents are listed on our website with the medical schools the graduated from, if you are interested in knowing the percentage of IMGs in the program.
We hope this information is helpful and thank you again for your interest.
Sincerely,
Jill Cuestas
Recruitment Coordinator
