The AST-accredited Emory Transplant Renal Medicine Fellowship Program is designed for fellows who have completed training in general nephrology and wish to pursue additional training in transplant nephrology. The goals of the program are to give the transplant fellow training and experience in end-stage renal disease, training in the selection of appropriate transplant recipients and donors, clinical experience in the immediate and long-term care of the transplant recipient, and training in the performance of renal transplant biopsies, along with an emphasis on the management of immunosuppressive agents and the evaluation of renal transplant dysfunction.
Emory Transplant Center is one of the largest transplant centers in the country. In the last year, we performed 375 kidney transplants (270 deceased and 105 living donors), 10 simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplants, 111 liver transplants, 47 heart transplants, and 21 lung transplants. Emory transplant nephrology fellows will gain extensive experience with dual organ transplants such as liver-kidney and heart-kidney and will have the opportunity to rotate with other solid organ transplant services.
During the transplant fellowship, Emory transplant nephrology fellows learn how to do an ultrasound of the transplanted kidney, and how to perform ultrasound-guided kidney transplant biopsy. On average, each transplant nephrology fellow does 50 to 75 kidney transplant biopsies.
Emory Transplant Center has one of the largest cohorts of kidney transplant patients receiving belatacept. Transplant nephrology fellows will gain extensive experience with management of patient on belatacept.
