Introductory Research Course
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
The overall objective of this course is to ensure a smooth transition for Pulmonary-/CCM fellows from clinical training into the research portion of their fellowship. The course will strive to accomplish several general objectives: 1) it will contribute to the fellow’s understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in pulmonary diseases, 2) it will introduce the fellow to basic concepts involved in basic and clinical research, 3) it will introduce the fellow to the research programs of a broad variety of faculty and allow the fellows to meet and interact with other personnel in each lab, and 4) it will bring greater uniformity to the process of research training in the Pulmonary/CCM Division. The course will be designed to accomplish the specific goals listed below:
Objectives and Specific goals:
- Learn how to apply the scientific method to test a hypothesis.
- Learn how to apply existing techniques to solve a problem under study.
- Obtain basic training with techniques that are particularly applicable to their chosen research project.
- Acquire the ability to analyze critically basic research literature.
- Acquire the ability to communicate their research findings to the scientific community.
Research Symposium
To highlight the accomplishments of research fellows and to increase trainees’ awareness of the breadth of research conducted within the division, faculty and fellows will participate in a Research Symposium of the Pulmonary Division. The symposium will provide the opportunity for the fellows to present their research accomplishments and to develop competence for presentation of research at scientific meetings. In addition, this Research Retreat is held at the Emory Conference Center to encourage the interaction between all members of the Division in an informal atmosphere.
