In 1996, Georgia was 6th in TB cases per 100,000 (10.7) in the United States and number 1 in the southeast. Also in 1996, Atlanta ranked 8th in number of TB cases (among 64 cities which are monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
New efforts to screen and prevent TB among high-risk residents where they live and seek care for other services are underway. Expanded outreach services include mobile screening stations at a variety of community-based sites, such as medical clinics, neighborhood health centers, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and corrections facilities. A series of special incentive programs, based on patient focus group findings, will be evaluated to determine the most effective methods for encouraging screening, follow-up and directly observed therapy among high risk groups.
