House Staff and Medical Student Instruction
The Division offers several opportunities for the house staff and
medical student to participate in ward and consultation rotations in
order to obtain "hands on" experience in digestive disease
medicine. The goals of these rotations are threefold: to know the clinical
characteristics and natural history of the more important digestive
diseases; to develop an understanding of the underlying processes that
contribute to the pathophysiology of the different diseases; and to
gain an appreciation of how investigators study the basic mechanisms
of disease.
The clinical service includes outpatient offices in the Emory Clinic,
Emory Hospital, The Atlanta Veterans Hospital and The Grady Memorial
Hospital as well as active inpatient and consultation services with
frequent faculty rounds at all hospitals. Division teaching conferences
attract participants from a number of basic and clinical disciplines.
Conferences include: a Journal Club, a weekly interdepartmental conference
with members of the digestive diseases, radiology and surgery departments,
a weekly GI Grand Rounds, and a weekly GI/Pathology conference. Conferences
at Grady and the VA include clinical conferences which are held each
week at individual hospitals. House staff who wish to gain experience
in flexible sigmoidoscopy are encouraged to participate in these exams
while on the rotation.
