Biography

Dr. Monica Serra is an Assistant Professor based at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Serra completed her PhD in Exercise, Nutrition, and Preventive Health at Baylor University (2009), a postdoctoral fellowship in Gerontology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore (2012) and a Special Fellowship in Gerontology at the Baltimore VA (2014). Prior to joining the Geriatrics section faculty at Emory in 2017, Dr. Serra served as Assistant Professor, Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at University of Maryland School of Medicine and Research Health Scientist at the Baltimore VA. Dr. Serra’s research focus is the clinical application of patient-centered clinical and basic science research, with a specific goal of better understandings the mechanisms by which lifestyle interventions, such as exercise training and nutritional modification, improve muscle and physical function and reduce metabolic risk in older individuals. She is currently PI of VA project researching “Aerobic Training to Improve Energy Utilization and Antioxidant Capacity in Stroke.” Her articles have been published in a number of leading journals including Journal of Gerontology and Geriatric Research, Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, and Stroke Research and Treatment.
