Dr. Echt is an associate professor in the Emory University Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology. She graduated magna cum laude from Jacksonville University (BA) and received her MS and PhD in Life-Span Developmental Psychology with a concentration on sensory and cognitive aging from the University of Georgia. Dr. Echt also holds a Gerontology Certificate from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Echt serves as the Atlanta Site Director for Education of the Birmingham-Atlanta VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) and as a Health Research Scientist and Assistant Director for Outreach and Education in the Rehabilitation Research and Development Center of Excellence at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health.

Dr. Echt's research program is focused on the identification of sensory, cognitive and psychosocial determinants of older adults’ losses in health self-management capacities including health literacy, medication management, and treatment decision-making to enable the specification of targeted rehabilitation interventions that accommodate and/or compensate for self-management challenges to foster health, independence and quality of life in aging. Dr. Echt is supported by several peer-reviewed grants from the VA and CDC.

Dr. Echt directly supervises PhD students and post-doctoral fellows including VA Career Development Awardees. She also supervises pharmacy residents at the Atlanta Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Echt has led the development of the Birmingham-Atlanta VA GRECC’s Associated Health Trainee Curriculum: A Health Professional’s Guide to Communication with Older Patients, Family and the Health Care Team and co-developed the VA training DVD: Start Making Sense: How to Communicate Effectively with Veterans with Cognitive Impairment.

Dr. Echt serves on the Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine (SCEGM), Steering Committee, Emory University Department of Medicine Research Advisory Team, the Atlanta VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Center Internal Steering and Community Outreach Committee (chair), Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) Operations, and the VHA Geriatrics and Extended Care Pharmacy Benefits Management Workgroup to improve medication management of elderly veterans.
