The following is a list of funding opportunities that may be of interest to Department of Medicine faculty. To learn more about each grant, please click on the title.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
AFSP research grants support studies that aim to increase understanding of the causes of suicide and factors related to suicide risk, or to test treatments and other interventions designed to prevent suicide. Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be considered, providing the study has an essential focus on suicide or suicide prevention
Distinguished Investigator Grants
Awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide
Amount: up to $100,000 over two years
Deadline: December 15 and June 15 annually
Standard Research Grants
Awarded to individual investigators at any level.
Amount: up to $75,000 over two years
Deadline: December 15 and June 15 annually
Young Investigator Grants
Awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. These grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
Amount: up to $75,000 over two years
Deadline: December 15 and June 15 annually
Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
Amount: up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding three years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
Deadline: December 15 and June 15 annually
Pilot Grants
Awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.
Amount: up to $30,000 over one or two years
Deadline: December 15 and June 15 annually.
American Heart Association
Young Investigator Database Research Seed Grant
The Council on Clinical Cardiology places a great value on the development of young linical investigators. To further this effort, the council has a limited number of seed grants for young investigators for meritorious research projects based on the data gathered from Get With The Guidelines (GWTG). GWTG is a hospital-based quality improvement program designed to close the treatment gap in cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Amount: $8,000 - $24,000
Deadline: September 30 and February 28 (twice a year)
Association of Subspecialty Professors
T. Franklin Williams Scholars
To investigators interested in a geriatric aspect of their subspecialty. ASP partners with 10 subspecialty societies to offer the award in nine internal medicine subspecialties.
Amount: $50,000 to $75,000 per yea for two- to four-year awards

Atlanta VAMC Research Awards
The Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center research program is largely conducted by VA based physician-scientist faculty members of Emory University School of Medicine. Available research awards include mentored Research Career Development Awards including PI salary granted on both a national and regional basis, and mentored Merit Review Entry Program awards, both of which focus on junior faculty members with research training but with a limited publication record and no independent national funding.

Doris Duke Foundation
Clinical Scientist Development Award
Provides grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to independent clinical research careers.
Amount: 3 year grants of $125,000 per year
Internal Nomination Deadline: Nov 6, 2009

Foundation Proposal Deadline: Dec 22, 2009

Emory Center for Faculty Development and Excellence
Author Development Program
Opportunity for junior full-time, untenured faculty, We invite faculty to apply for a mini-conference focused on critique of a first book manuscript. Such conferences offer an opportunity for authors to receive feedback from senior colleagues in a time- frame useful for revision.
Amount: $2000
Deadline: Applications are due December 1, 2009 to Amy Benson Brown abrow01@emory.edu
To apply, please write a two-page proposal for the conference. Briefly summarize your book
topic (just one paragraph please) and then describe how you would organize such a meeting to benefit your own manuscript. To be eligible, the applicant must have a draft of the manuscript ready to circulate to the invited readers at least three months before the date he or she sets for meeting to discuss the manuscript.
National Heart Lung and Blood Institute
The goal of all these programs is to increase the numbers and capabilities of scientists engaged in biomedical and behavioral research and to offer scientists the opportunity to receive full-time training in areas that reflect a national need. The programs also provide postdoctoral individuals and new independent researchers the opportunity to establish their research careers.
