Dr. Mark Nanes is Professor of Medicine at Emory University and Assistant Chief of Medicine at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Nanes received a BA at Clark University and PhD / MD at Case Western Reserve University. His graduate work in reproductive endocrinology focused on regulation of corpus luteum function in the laboratory of Dr. Irving Rothchild and subsequently identification of vitamin D 1-a hydroxylase activity in decidual tissue and placenta. He completed his medical residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospital of Case Western Reserve University.
Following training in internal medicine, Dr. Nanes was a medical staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Dr. Stephen Marx, Metabolic Diseases Branch, NIDDK. Here he developed interest in the action of vitamin D and of inflammatory cytokines in bone.
In 1988 he joined the faculty at Emory University where he is now a tenured Professor of Medicine. Dr. Nanes continued his research focus on the inflammatory cytokine TNF as a mediator of skeletal disease. TNF contributes to the pathophysiology of bone loss by targeting the differentiation, function, and lifespan of bone cells and by causing acquired resistance to vitamin D. He currently focuses on cytokine modulation of signal pathways that control osteoblast differentiation. His work has resulted in numerous peer review publications and chapters. Funding from the NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs has supported Dr. Nanes' laboratory.
Dr. Nanes academic time is split between Emory University and the VA Medical Center. His work includes the teaching of graduate and medical students, Endocrinology fellows, and medicine residents. He has served as Program Director of the Emory Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program and was past Interim Director of the Division of Endocrinology. At the VA Medical Center, he serves as Chief of the Endocrine Section in addition to his duties as Assistant Chief of Subspecialty Medicine. National contributions include service as ad hoc reviewer or editorial board member for scientific journals and contributions to grant review boards of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, and private foundations. He has been a reviewer and member for the VA Merit Review Board for Endocrinology/Bone Diseases and served on numerous local and National VA committees. He currently serves on the publications committee of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research.
