Welcome to the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program at Emory University School of Medicine.  The Emory University School of Medicine is ranked among the nation's finest institutions for education, biomedical research, and patient care.  The school trains 1,100 residents and fellows in 81 accredited programs.  Medical school faculty received $332.7 million in sponsored research in 2008 and the school is ranked 18th nationally in amount of NIH dollars received.  Emory is one of the fastest-growing recipients of NIH awards in the country.  Physician faculty in Emory's own hospitals, affiliate teaching hospitals, and outpatient venues are responsible for more than 3.8 million patient services annually.

Internal medicine residency training occurs at five participating hospitals.  They include Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and Wesley Woods Geriatric Center.  Residents gain experience in both community- and university-based hospital settings by rotating through all five of the participating hospitals.  With the exception of Wesley Woods, each hospital is staffed with one or two  chief residents and a site dedicated Associate Program Director to coordinate the educational program day-to-day activities at their site.

Atlanta's large and diverse patient population provides an ideal clinical environment for the education of medical residents.  Residents receive a broad educational experience which includes experience in general medicine, all of the internal medicine subspecialties, neurology, psychiatry, allergy/immunology, dermatology, ophthalmology, office gynecology, otolaryngology, non-surgical orthopedics, palliative care, sleep medicine and rehabilitation medicine.

We invite you to explore our program website in its entirety and wish you success as you prepare for your career as a physician.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
