INTERVENTIONAL NEPHROLOGY

Overview

The Emory University Renal Division of the Department of Medicine invites applications for a one-year training fellowship in Interventional Nephrology. The fellowship incorporates extensive clinical experience in endovascular procedures, research opportunities, and a dedicated educational program in Interventional Nephrology. The focus of the fellowship is to prepare trainees for careers as independent clinical investigators in academic medicine. American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional certification is readily achievable.


Training Program Description

Program Goals

  • Understand the indications and contraindications for interventional procedures
  • Appreciate the effectiveness and limitations of interventional procedures
  • Recognize and manage interventional complications
  • Recognize and value both endovascular and surgical modalities of treatment
  • Learn and apply the clinical and technical aspects of interventional procedures in compliance with the highest standards of care
  • Cultivate and maintain a quality approach to patient care based on critical thinking, compassion and dedication
  • Promote scholarly research

Clinical Experience

  • The trainee will gain clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with vascular access dysfunction
  • Pre-interventional procedures evaluation and planning are conducted with the supervising faculty member
  • The trainee should recognize and manage procedure related complication

Technical Experience

  • Acquire the skills needed for the completion and interpretation of angiograms, vascular ultrasound, and hemodynamics
  • Perform over 500 interventions including catheter management, vein mapping, balloon angioplasty, stent placement and thrombectomies
  • Create a comprehensive report following each procedure
  • Be appropriately supervised by faculty members during all aspects and components of the educational experiences

Didactic Curriculum

  • History of vascular access

            • Arteriovenous Fistulas and grafts

  • Monitoring and surveillance
  • Tunneled catheters
  • Basic anatomy of dialysis vascular access
  • Physical examination of dialysis vascular access
  • Radiation physics, radiation safety and imaging
  • Sedation and analgesia
  • Angioplasty of dialysis vascular access
  • Endovascular thrombectomy
  • Endovascular stents
  • Salvage procedures for Arteriovenous fistulas
  • Vascular mapping
  • CPT coding of endovascular procedures

Research

  • Active clinical research program
  • Data entry and analysis and participation in retrospective studies
  • Trainees are required to complete at least one research project during the academic year including preparation of a paper for submission to a peer-reviewed journal


Fellowships

Qualified applicants must have completed a subspecialty-training program in Nephrology. The successful candidate will have temporary Emory University faculty status as a Senior Associate in Medicine.
