Introduction

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program at Emory University seeks to train physicians interested in careers in academic medicine. We are currently approved by the ACGME to train four fellows per year with a total of twelve fellows in our program. The structure of the program consists of 18 months of clinical training and 18 months of mentored research activity. Clinical training takes place at five sites across the Emory campus:

1. Emory University Hospital and Clinic - a tertiary care referral hospital
2. Grady Memorial Hospital - a large county hospital with a level I trauma center
3. Atlanta VA Medical Center - a busy VA medical center with strong research programs
4. Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University - a busy community hospital in downtown Atlanta
5. Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital - a long-term acute care hospital and rehabilitation center

Training

During the first 18 months of fellowship, each trainee completes a core curriculum of clinical pulmonary and critical care rotations. Additional training in epidemiology, lung transplantation, and sleep medicine is available based on the needs and prior experience of the trainee. Training occurs at all five of Emory's training sites.

During the second 18 months of fellowship, each trainee participates in a research project. After interviews with divisional researchers, the trainee will select a mentor who will assist the trainee in formulating a project. An optional fourth year of research training is available. Each trainee will be expected to submit at least 1-2 abstracts for presentation at a national meeting and to prepare, as the first author at least 1-2 manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. We hope that trainees will choose to pursue a research career by spending additional years in a laboratory or clinical research setting, ultimately becoming an established independent investigator.

The trainees will be provided with opportunities to pursue basic or clinically oriented investigations. The research laboratory space of the pulmonary division consists of 4,500 sq ft located on the 12th floor of the Atlanta VA Medical Center and approximately 12,000 sq ft in the Whitehead Biomedical Research Building located on the Emory campus. Another 1,000 sq ft are available for patient-related research. These modern research laboratories are fully equipped to support state-of-the-art investigative techniques.
