Research Experience

Post-Doc Research Fellow 07/2003~ present

Vascular Research Lab at Grady Memorial Hospital
Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Cardiology
Atlanta , Georgia

Supervisors:
Bobby Khan M.D/PhD (Director CCU and Vascular Research Lab)
Tarek Helmy MD (Director Cath Lab and Associate Director Vascular Research Lab)

ISLAND study( IrbeSartan and Lipoic Acid in endothelial Dysfunction)

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial studying the effects of irbesartan vs. lipoic acid vs. placebo x 4 weeks on endothelial function and inflammatory markers in patients at high risk for CAD

Lipid-Lowering Therapy Improves Levels of Inflammatory Markers and Cardiovascular Outco me s in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure

The addition of statin therapy to a me dical regi me n of patients with chronic heart failure improves cardiac function and cardiovascular outco me s. In addition, the improve me nt in the levels of serum inflammatory markers with statin therapy suggests the therapeutic benefit in chronic heart failure may function via an anti-inflammatory effect.

RICA study : Results of the Renin-angiotensin system Inhibition in Coronary Atherosclerosis Effects of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors on cardiovascular outco me s in subjects with stable coronary artery disease :

This study compared the efficacy of quinapril versus irbesartan versus placebo in reducing cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients with stable coronary artery disease on optimal me dical therapy.

Cocaine Use as an Independent Risk Factor for Significant Atherosclerosis in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization

Retrospective review of ongoing cocaine use as a risk factor for significant coronary stenoses in patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. Tarek Helmy, M.D., co-investigator .

Micardis Hypertension Study

A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, forced-titration, comparison of MICARDIS ® HCT (telmisartan 80 mg / hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg) versus DIOVAN ® HCT (valsartan 160 mg / hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg) using seated trough cuff blood pressure in patients with stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension.

EFFECTS study (Endothelial Function of Ezetimibe Combination Therapy with Simvastatin).

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial studying the effects of simvastatin with or without ezitimibe vs. placebo x 12 weeks on endothelial function in patients with hyperlipidemia .

The Effect of Alpha Linolenic Acid on Endothelial Function in Systemic Large Arteries

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial studying the effects of alpha-linolenic acid vs. placebo on brachial artery reactivity. Charles Harper, M.D. and Paul Damato, M.D., co-investigators.

ACCOMPLISH Trial ( Avoiding Cardiovascular Events through Combination Therapy in Patients Living with Systolic Hypertension)

A prospective, multinational, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled trial to compare the effects of Lotrel (amlodipine/benazepril) to benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide combined on the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with high risk hypertension

MRI versus Ultrasound Evaluation Of Endothelial Function

We hypothesize that MRI evaluation of endothelial function is superior to that provided by BART. We propose the following study, which compares the relative utility of MRI versus BART in evaluating endothelial function in both healthy and abnormal subjects

Actos in Metabolic Syndro me study

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial of pioglitazone on ambulatory blood pressure and endothelial function in patients with me tabolic syndro me .

The Effects of Rosiglitazone on Free Fatty Acids-Induced Hypertension in Obese Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes

To determine if FFA-induced hypertension in obese subjects is the result of activation of

the renin-angiotensin system and/or induction of endothelial dysfunction & to determine

Whether rosiglitazone could protect against FFA-induced insulin resistance, increased blood pressure, and endothelial dysfunction in obese subjects with type 2 diabetes . Guillermo E. Umpierrez, MD.

Post-Doc Research Fellow                                     01/2003~ 05-2003

Role of Chlamydial Infection in patients with Aortic stenosis and me an aortic pressure > 20 and the Inflammatory Markers for Aortic stenosis

Endothelial Dysfunction as basis of atherosclerosis & Use of L-Arginine and vitamin E for its treat me nt.

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial studying the effects of L-Arginine vs. Vitamin E vs. placebo x 4 weeks on endothelial function and inflammatory markers in patients at high risk for CAD.
